An all-new Grand Vitara has been unveiled in India by Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki’s new compact SUV revives the Grand Vitara SUV name tag almost a decade after its last appearance in India

The Grand Vitara compact SUV has been revealed by Maruti Suzuki in India.

It is essentially a mild-hybrid version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder for the Indian market, and it is available in both mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid engine configurations.

Almost a decade after the name was last used in the Indian market, the Grand Vitara name returns.

Until the beginning of the last decade, the company had also used the Grand Vitara name for its flagship SUV during the early 2000s.

Compared to its sister vehicle, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, the new Grand Vitara shares a similar silhouette. Nevertheless, the design has been tweaked a bit.

A revised grille with chrome embellishments graces the front fascia of the Grand Vitara, while the bumper has been tweaked with quieter lower air vents and a smaller main headlamp housing.

Similar to the new Baleno, the LED DRLs also feature a three-dot pattern. Similarly, the Grand Vitara gets some differences in its rear design, the most notable of which is the tail-lamps.

There are different LED details along with lightbar-like extensions on the slim units. Underneath the bumper is a second cluster of lights similar to the one on the Urban Cruiser.

Also similar to the Hyryder is the design of the cabin, with a display taking center stage on the dashboard and soft touch materials adding to the premium feel.

Aside from the infotainment system with 9.0-inch SmartPlay Pro+, it also features a wireless smartphone connection, ventilated front seats, head-up display, up to 6 airbags, ESC, traction control, and wireless phone charging.

On the engine front, the Grand Vitara is powered by the same 1.5-liter DualJet petrol engine used in other Maruti models.

Besides the manual gearbox, an automatic 6-speed transmission is also available, as is all-wheel drive. A 1.5-liter petrol engine combined with an on-board battery pack and electric motor is also offered as a hybrid setup. It has the ability to drive in hybrid and all-electric modes and is paired with an eCVT transmission.

With the launch of the new Grand Vitara later this year, it will compete with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
