Monitoring of asteroids is necessary because their direction can change anytime. If an asteroid deviates from the path and collides with the earth, then there can be a big catastrophe. Scientists have always believed that millions of years ago, dinosaurs were exterminated from our earth due to the destruction after an asteroid collision.
NASA has told It is believed that 2023 HY3, coming close to the Earth today, belongs to the Amor group of asteroids. They come close to the Earth, but do not cross the Earth’s orbit. Most of the asteroids in this group cross the orbit of Mars.
Apart from this, NASA has also told about two more asteroids. These are – 2023 HV and 2018 VS6. Both are the size of a house. Asteroid 2023 HV will pass through the earth from a distance of about 13 lakh kilometers. Whereas, the 2018 VS6 will cover a distance of around 2 million kms. The US space agency tracks those asteroids that pass through the Earth from a distance of 7.5 million kilometers or less.
Asteroids are also called minor planets. Just as all the planets of our solar system revolve around the Sun, similarly the asteroids also revolve around the Sun. Asteroids are rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our Solar System about 4.6 billion years ago. When an asteroid is discovered, it is named by the International Astronomical Union Committee.
