coolpad mega 3 3 sim phone review

Phones with three SIMs are not common, but there are times when the need is felt. You may want to use the SIM of multiple telecom companies at one go due to poor connectivity, or have different numbers for any other reason, or you may want to keep the local SIM nearby during the journey without any change in the regular usage.

Coolpad is one of the few smartphone makers that has introduced a three-SIM smartphone. We are talking about the Coolpad Mega 3. The funny thing is that it costs less than Rs 7,000. This means that it will not be a problem for the company to give a distinct identity to the handset in the competitive market. On the other hand, low-end phones are usually fine in a case or two. As a customer, you have to compromise in many departments.

It is worth noting that the Mega 3 has been introduced just a few days after the launch of the Coolpad Mega 2.5D. But the cost of both is almost the same. The Mega 2.5D was named after its curved-edge glass front, and the Mega 3 seems to have been named after the three-SIM feature. Let us try to know how the phone with this unique feature is in the rest department?

Coolpad Mega 3 Design
It is a bit big and thick phone. 170 grams will be considered as weight. Shockingly, Coolpad is marketing this phone with a low weight even though it is a bit heavy compared to the normal phone. It is a completely plastic body phone and the battery is removable. The design is such that the phone fits easily in the palm. But the rear part does not give good feeling in the hands. It is not that easy to use with one hand, but it does not slip in the hands.

We got the White color variant for review. It does not use curved glass like Mega 2.5D. You will see a flash along with the front camera. At the same time, Android navigation buttons will be seen at the bottom which are not backlit. There is a Micro-USB port at the bottom and a 3.5mm audio socket at the top.

After removing the rear panel, you will see three Micro-SIM slots. You cannot remove the battery. If you look carefully, you will see a microSD card slot at the bottom. This is a good thing, because these days dual sim phones are also coming with hybrid slot.

Overall, the build is fine as a budget phone. It’s not the best phone to look at, but you’ll have to make some compromises.

Coolpad Mega 3 Specifications and Features
The 5.5 inch screen has a resolution of 720×1280 pixels which is not bad at all. The good thing is that every budget phone these days comes with a display with this resolution. Sharpness and viewing angles are quite good. You will not have any problem watching the video. There will be some difficulty in reading on the screen in daylight.

MediaTek MT6737 processor is not very powerful. The highest clock speed is 1.2 GHz. You will get 16 GB of storage with 2 GB RAM. You can use microSD card up to 64 GB. The company has shown sincerity in the matter of battery. You will get 3050 mAh battery. Probably because of this the weight of the phone is high.

The sensors of both the cameras are of 8 megapixels. The Coolpad Mega 3 comes with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, FM radio and GPS. All three SIM slots are also equipped with 4G and Voice over LTE feature. There is no fingerprint sensor in it and there is no support for quick charging.

Talking about the software, the phone will run on Coolpad’s CoolUI 8.0 skin based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Many apps will be pre-installed in this phone of Coolpad. Coolpad’s apps ask for too many permissions, which we believe is excessive.

Coolpad Mega 3 Performance
The Coolpad Mega 3 isn’t a bad phone by any means, but you’ll realize right away that the phone isn’t very powerful. You won’t be able to decide whether it’s because of a weak processor or heavy software.

However, there was no problem in playing the video. The display is big and sharp too. With its help, the fun of watching videos will be great. Surprisingly, even the Asphalt 8 did not face any difficulty in walking. One speaker of the phone is not very good.

We never felt the phone getting too hot. The vibrator of this phone is very light and harsh.

There are 8-megapixel sensors on the front and rear panels. But there is a big difference in quality. The rear camera takes good closeup shots in daylight. There was no shortage of details in them. However, the quality starts to decline as the distance from the subject increases. You will be disappointed with the landscape shot. There was a lack of detail in these. Noises were high in shots taken indoors. Photos taken at night were either completely black, or without detail.

The front camera took good selfies. However, Roshni also played an important role in this. You’ll be able to record videos with a maximum resolution of 720 pixels. Their quality was usable.

Battery life was excellent. The battery lasted for 10 hours and 11 minutes in the video loop test. It easily lasted for a day in normal use. However, it took a long time to charge the battery.

our decision
When it comes to a particular feature in a cheap phone, it usually means compromising on other features. Look was a priority in the Coolpad Mega 2.5D, but performance-wise, the phone lagged behind in every department. This time around, Coolpad has not only given a unique feature to the Mega 3, but also has not compromised on performance.

Camera performance could be better. CPU is a bit weak. The software needs a bit of a clean-up. But this is a budget phone, so we have not set too many expectations from it. On the other hand, the display quality, battery life and design are good.

At this price point, the Mega 3 will take on the Xiaomi Redmi 3S which has a more powerful processor, a better camera and a bigger battery. If you are willing to spend a little more money, then you will be more satisfied with the phone in the Rs 8,999-9,999 range. However, in the Mega 3, you will be able to use three SIMs simultaneously. If you like this feature very much, then it will not be a problem to ignore the rest of the shortcomings.
