Xiaomi has debunked the myth of not using a smartphone in a storm with a YouTube Shorts. The Chinese tech company has a new shorts as part of its #XiaomiAcademy series. video sharing titled (translated) “Can thunderstorms affect smartphone use?”
In the video, we can see that the company has prepared a special setup, in which Tesla Coil has been used as an alternative to storm power. “Lightning” was simulated through these coils, directly hitting a Xiaomi phone in use.
A video is seen playing on the device despite lightning striking the handset. This experiment showed that the electric shock had no effect on the performance or any other behavior of the phone. Following this, Xiaomi says it “proves that the storm does not affect the use of the smartphone.”
After this, Xiaomi also made a phone call and checked the call quality and there was no issue with that either. Xiaomi explained that the myth likely stems from old-fashioned wired telephones, as there have been extremely rare cases of people dying from lightning while using their wired phones during thunderstorms.
