One of Check Point Research Report A series of cyberattacks carried out by a Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) group code-named “Camaro Dragon” have been disclosed, according to a report. These attacks were carried out against European foreign affairs institutions. The cyber security firm says hackers are targeting TP-Link via special firmware implants containing various harmful components, including a customized backdoor named “horse shell” to attack victims.
According to the research, it was uncertain how the attackers infected their router devices with this firmware implant, but it was discovered that it could be possible that the hackers could exploit these devices by exploiting previously known vulnerabilities or bypassing authentication. Access these devices by targeting devices that use default or weak and easily guessable passwords.
The research further highlights that this particular firmware has a firmware-agnostic nature, which means that not only routers from TP-Link, but a wide range of devices and vendors can be affected by it.
Anyone can be a victim of hacking. In such a situation, you should keep updating the software of your routers regularly. Almost all router companies release official firmware updates for their router devices. In some cases the update notification reaches the users and if it does not, the firmware can be installed from the router’s app or by downloading the firmware file available on the official website of the router company.
Apart from this, it is a better option to change the default log-in details that come with the router and also the passwords of the devices connected to the router should be difficult and strong.
