Internet Suspended In Jamshedpur Due To Violence Between Two Groups, Section 144 Imposed

In the last few months, there have been incidents of internet shutdown by the administration in many states. Internet has been suspended in Jharkhand’s industrial city of Jamshedpur following stone pelting between two groups. In this case, there was tension between the two groups over insulting a religious flag. This incident happened on Sunday.

There have also been cases of arson and damage to properties in Jamshedpur. The incident took place in the area under Kadma police station. Section 144 has been imposed in the area and a flag march was conducted by the security forces on Monday. City executive magistrate Jyoti Kumari said, “Security forces are conducting a flag march. Section 144 has been imposed in the area. Internet services have been suspended till further orders.” A large number of security forces, including the Rapid Action Force, have been deployed in the entire area, officials said. Senior Superintendent of Police, Jamshedpur, Prabhat Kumar said, “The situation is under control. People gathered in the area have been removed. Security forces have been deployed in the entire area.”

Vijaya Jadhav, deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum, said, “Some people have also been detained. We are assessing the situation. Peace committee and other concerned parties have been contacted to normalize the situation.” He also requested people not to pay heed to rumours. Vijaya said, “People are requested not to pay heed to any rumours. If they receive any provocative or indecent messages, please report them to the police.” This matter is being investigated.

Last month in Punjab also mobile internet and SMS services will remain closed for a few days due to apprehension of violence and disturbance. The state Home Affairs and Justice Department had imposed this ban. The ban was imposed after alleged Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh absconded. Punjab Police is continuously searching for him to nab him. Security was also increased across the state.
