Latest from cyber security research firm Trend Micro Report (via Ars Technica) According to the investigation conducted by the firm on 50 different Android device models, it has been found that 8.9 million (89 lakh) Android devices are infected with malicious software.
Another cyber security firm, Sophos were identified The app is named Guerrilla. The firm closely examined the Guerrilla app and found that it is part of the infrastructure of 15 different apps in the Google Play Store. This is certainly worrying, because viruses can easily steal device data.
The virus pushes an “update notification” to the phone, which is actually just a way to get into that application. After this, it keeps on downloading harmful software on the pretext of update in the user’s phone. The downloaded software affects many parts of the phone including battery life and performance.
The report says that the ads users receive in phones infected with the Guerrilla virus are often redundant and can be classified as pornographic content. The virus has currently affected smartphones in the US, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand and Russia the most.
At present, the report of both the firms has not mentioned the name of the mobile phone brands or applications in which the guerrilla applications are present.
