Micromax Canvas 5 Review

Micromax has announced its old flagship after almost two years. handset upgraded version of canvas 5 Launched in the market. Canvas 5 has been claimed to give great camera performance. Will it be able to make a mark for itself? Let’s know.

look and design
The 2.5D Curved Arc Display gives Micromax Canvas 5 a distinct identity. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection has been given to protect the front panel from scratches. There is nothing special in the look of the handset that will draw your attention towards it. Due to the metal frame, it feels good when held in the hands. The 3.5mm headphone socket is on the top and the micro-USB port is at the bottom.

The back has a textured plastic cover that can be removed. By removing it, users will be able to insert SIM card and microSD card. However, the battery is completely sealed. The back cover looks very cheap. On the rear panel itself, there is a 13-megapixel primary camera with LED flash.

The display measures 5.2 inches and sports a full-HD IPS panel. It works well in all lighting conditions. The touch response of the display is also good and works fine in most light conditions except direct sunlight. Notification LED, 5-megapixel camera and LED flash have been given above the screen. In a way, it can be said that this is a selfie centric handset.

Overall, the build of the phone is good. Excluding the back cover, it is very slim and weighs 143 grams. It can be said that the design is very effective.

Specifications and software
The key specifications of the Canvas 5 are not surprising. It has 1.3GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6753 chipset, 3GB RAM, 16GB inbuilt storage, Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, FM radio, GPS and USB OTG. There is also support for microSD card (up to 32 GB). This is a dual sim device.

The phone runs on the stock version of Android Lollipop 5.1. It has a single-layer home screen, which means the app drawer will not be available. Micromax has made changes to the icon of its default apps in this handset. You may have some trouble using it.

In this handset too, the phone maker has given many pre-installed apps, some of which cannot be removed. Micromax has also included a smart wake gesture in the handset which can be controlled from the Settings app.

performance
The Canvas 5 handles daily tasks with ease. There is no problem in using common apps and multitasking. Intensive 3D games like Dead Trigger are also easy to play. The phone does get a little hot around the Micromax logo, but nothing to worry about. Call quality is quite good.

It took a little longer for the phone to be fully charged. Benchmark test scores were average. But in common use you will never be troubled by this handset.

The Canvas 5 played full-HD videos with ease. The video viewing experience was also great due to the crisp display. The mono rear speaker delivers decent sound, but it does sound a bit underwhelming. The headset that comes with the handset gives a cheap feel, but the performance is good. The audio quality is very average so don’t expect too much.

The 13-megapixel primary camera surprised us with its performance, especially in daytime macros and landscape. It takes some time to focus, due to which the photos in burst mode become blurry. Landscape photos lack detail, but the quality isn’t bad. The camera is not efficient in low light.

Users will be able to record videos of 1080 pixels resolution with the rear and front cameras. The output is decent, but due to the lack of video stabilization, it becomes a bit shaky.

The front camera comes with a fixed focus lens, but it is good for taking selfies.

The 2900mAh battery lasted for 7 hours 12 minutes in our video loop test. It will be considered as average only. The battery of the phone has lasted for a day in normal use. We found that the battery level drops rapidly when the camera is used.

our decision
The price of Micromax Canvas 5 is Rs 11,999. The company has assured this handset to get Android 6.0 Lollipop update in future. If seen, this handset presents a strong claim in the price range of Rs 15,000. Display quality, build, camera performance in daylight and app performance are the biggest highlights of this phone. We are not satisfied with the battery performance, the time taken to charge the handset and the performance of the camera in low light.

Comparison of Canvas 5 with Xiaomi Mi 4i is natural in this price range. Looking at the battery life, we would suggest that you buy the Xiaomi Mi 4i.
