Motorola Edge 30 Pro Review: Flagship Performance in a Budget!

Motorola Edge 20 series was launched by Motorola last year. The Edge series is quite premium compared to the company’s G-series and E-series budget smartphones, with the help of which Motorola also competed in this premium segment. Edge 20 and Edge 20 Pro smartphones fall in the segment below 30 thousand and 40 thousand rupees respectively. Now the company has launched Edge 30 Pro as an upgrade model of Edge 20 Pro, which has been brought with the aim of giving tremendous performance. Motorola has given Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in this phone. Along with this, the price of the phone has also been tried to be kept low accordingly. If you’re looking for the most powerful processor Android phone for the lowest possible price, is the Motorola Edge 30 Pro the only option? Learn in this review of mine.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro price in India

Motorola Edge 30 Pro 49,999 in India and comes in only 8GB RAM and 128GB storage model. There is also no option to increase the storage. The company has introduced it in Cosmos Blue and Stardust White color options.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro design

Motorola Edge 30 Pro design approx Edge 20 Pro is the same as. I came across this Cosmos Blue option for review which I found quite premium. The phone has a large 6.7-inch display and a small camera hole has been given at the top. Thin bezels are found on the sides of the display. The back panel is made of glass with curved sides, which makes the phone comfortable to hold. The phone is quite big and it weighs 196 grams, which is also felt when held in the hand. The frame of the phone is plastic, which is not suitable for flagship phones.

The power and volume buttons of the smartphone are given on the right side and according to me they are set at a slight height. The left frame of the phone is kept blank. Since the fingerprint scanner is embedded in the power button, I often had to drag my thumb upwards to unlock the phone. The company could have kept the power button down and the volume buttons on the left side. Only the secondary microphone is given in the top frame of the phone, while the SIM tray, primary microphone, USB Type-C port and loudspeaker have been given in the bottom.

In the rear panel, the camera module is given in the top left corner. It doesn’t protrude much, but looks beautifully integrated into the rear panel. The phone does not appear to be picked up even when placed on a flat place. To prevent scratches on the primary camera, Motorola has given a metal ring around it. The phone gets an IP52 rating, so it is dust proof and can survive damage in light splashes of water.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro specifications and software

Motorola Edge 30 Pro flaunts a 6.7-inch FullHD+ AMOLED display with HDR10+ certification and a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. The viewing angles of the panel are good, and its brightness was adequate when taken outdoors. The company has given DC dimming option in it, which helps in saving power by reducing the brightness. The front of the phone gets the protection of Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is a bit surprising, because the protection of Gorilla Glass 5 has been given in the back panel. The stereo speakers in the Edge 30 Pro come with support for Dolby Atmos.

The most important feature of the phone is its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. This is the most powerful processor currently available in any Android phone. iQoo 9 Pro And Samsung Galaxy S22 The same processor has been given in the series as well, but the price of these smartphones is very high.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro has support for Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, 13 5G bands, NFC and six satellite navigation systems. Motorola claims that more 5G bands can also be activated through a software update. Motorola Edge 30 Pro supports dual nano SIM and supports dual 5G and dual 4G VoLTE.

The Edge 30 Pro packs a 4,800mAh battery with 68W fast charging. The charger comes with the box. It also supports wireless charging with 15W capacity. Apart from this, it can also charge other Qi supported devices and accessories with 5W wireless power sharing capability.

The phone runs on the company’s My UX skin based on Android 12. Android security patch of January 2022 was given in my unit. The company says that in addition to Android 13, the phone will also get an update of Android 14. Along with this, Android security updates will also be available for three years. Doesn’t seem to interfere with Motorola’s customization interface. With stock Android 12, the UI gets large toggle buttons and an indicator when the camera or microphone is in use. The shape, color and font style of the icons can be customized. But, you cannot change the accent color of the UI based wallpaper. I would have liked it if it had this feature. This feature is available in Realme 9 Pro + and Google Pixel running Android 12.

The user interface of the phone is very easy to use. There is also support for Moto Gestures, through which you are able to perform many types of actions. These include some of the traditional Moto gestures like double chop for flashlight toggle and double crank to launch camera. With the help of the Moto app, many more actions can also be activated for this. I really liked its power-touch gesture. In this, a double-tapping of the power button brings up a panel in which shortcuts to preset contacts and apps are available. Apart from some google apps i found only facebook preloaded in it and it can be removed as well.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro performance and battery life

Motorola Edge 30 Pro is the first smartphone I used with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The processor is very fast and whenever I tried to do something in it, that activity loaded instantly. Scrolling was very smooth thanks to its 144Hz display. The AMOLED panel of the phone shows attractive colors and the contrast is also quite good. The experience of watching videos with the help of stereo speakers was also good. One thing I did notice is that the speakers are not balanced well. The side mounted fingerprint scanner felt a bit out of reach, but was able to unlock the phone with ease.

The phone scored quite well on benchmark apps. Its score on AnTuTu was 9,41,189. The phone scored 1,194 in Geekbench 5’s single-core test and 3,542 in the multi-core test. It managed to maintain 81 frames per second in GFXBench’s Car Chase test. Here I noticed that the phone was heating up due to the load on the processor. Due to this the battery was also draining very quickly.

No lag was found while playing Call of Duty: Mobile. The fun in the game is doubled due to the stereo speaker. However, after 20 minutes I found that the phone had overheated and the battery was also drained. Looking at its benchmark tests and gaming experience, I can say that the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is quite a powerful processor. But when loaded, its efficiency starts decreasing a bit.

The phone lasted 13 hours and 38 minutes in our HD video loop test for battery, which is pretty average performance for its battery capacity. In normal use on full charge, I was able to run it throughout the day. But I soon felt the need to charge it when using the camera and gaming. With 68W fast charging, the phone got 78 percent charged in 30 minutes and was fully charged within an hour.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro cameras

The phone has three high-resolution cameras, with the highest resolution being a 60-megapixel selfie camera. There is a 50-megapixel primary camera in the rear, which comes with optical image stabilization. Its aperture is f/1.8. The secondary camera is a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, which has a field of view of 114 degrees. The third sensor is a 2-megapixel depth lens.

No changes have been made to the camera app. It gets the same camera features that are also seen in the Edge 20 Pro. With the help of Dual Capture, you can record video using two cameras. It also has an audio zoom feature, which focuses more on the sound of the subject when zoomed in.

The details are good in the photos taken during the day time and this phone is quite fast in terms of focus. The dynamic range of photos is quite good. The primary camera and wide angle camera capture good colors, but details were lacking and barrel distortion was also visible.

Close shots taken with the phone’s camera were quite good and the texture was also well maintained. The phone used to signal to switch to macro mode when the subject was too close. Because it uses a 50-megapixel camera for macro shots, the results were captured with a lot of detail. Edge detection was also good in portrait shots.

Low-light photos were not impressive and the phone was unable to capture details in the dark areas of the frame. Capturing photos with Night Mode was taking 3 seconds but highlights were missed. I preferred to take regular shots instead of night mode, as there was not much difference in details with night mode.

The photo taken with the selfie camera was quite good. Photos came out better during the day and even in low light. Selfie portrait was also able to capture the phone better. The results were better when shooting in low light with an extra light source.

With the primary rear camera, up to 8K video can be shot in Motorola Edge 30 Pro. But videos can be shot only up to 4K with the selfie camera. Footage shot at 1080p in daylight was over-sharp, but 4K footage was better. Video stabilization was good. Low-light footage was also fine, but the grain was high when shooting in 4K.

Verdict

The Motorola Edge 30 Pro smartphone has come as a major upgrade to the Edge 20 Pro. It can also compete in the above-priced price segment. The highlight of the phone is its processor. If the need for improvement in low-light conditions is put aside a bit, then the camera performance will also be said to be good. Motorola has increased the competition by bringing this device at a price of Rs 49,999.

However, the Edge 30 Pro falls behind the title of the perfect smartphone. It is powerful, so it gets hot very quickly. There was no problem in normal use, but the phone does get hot while playing 3D games. If you do not mind more than this, then you will like this phone very much. But if you like to play a lot of games on the phone, then Asus ROG Phone 5s In this case, with a slightly lower price, it becomes a better option.
