- Netflix is working on a new feature to stop password sharing.
- Testing of the feature started in many countries.
- At present, the feature has not started in India.
Netflix is testing a new way to end the free password sharing business. The company recently launched the ‘Add Extra Member’ option for users living in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. Under this feature, people outside the user’s home will have to pay to use the Netflix account by sharing the password. At present, this feature has not been started in India.
At the same time, the video streaming platform has announced a similar ‘Add a Home’ feature in some other regions. Netflix will begin testing the add-a-home option in several countries, including Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Netflix has not yet given any information about charging users in India or sharing passwords.
Earlier, the company had indicated that it would start charging all users for sharing their Netflix account passwords by the end of the year. Hence, we can expect the company to bring a feature similar to ‘add a home’ in India in the coming months.
Netflix Password Sharing
From next month a new ‘Add a Home’ button will appear. Once the feature is rolled out, every Netflix account in the countries mentioned above will include One Home, where anyone living in the same household can use the platform on any device. They will also be able to access Netflix while on the go. If you want to allow someone to use your Netflix account in another home, you’ll need to pay a fee. However, there is no information yet about how much fee will have to be paid for this in India.
Users will be able to control the account
The company said that users on the basic Netflix plan will be able to add one extra home, while standard and premium users will be able to add two more extra homes respectively. Netflix will also allow users in these countries to control where their accounts are being used. Along with this, users will also give them the option to remove Homes from the setting page whenever they want.
Impact on investment from account sharing
Announcing this, Chenghai Long, Director of Product Innovation, Netflix, said, “It’s great that our members love Netflix movies and TV shows so much that they want to share them as much as possible, but for today’s families Between account sharing impairs our ability to invest in and improve our service.
Less than 2 lakh Customers
The company recently announced that it is testing a cheap subscription plan with ads. Currently, Netflix does not offer commercials, but it was decided in view of the sudden drop in the company’s share prices. The company’s CEO Reed Hastings believes that these steps will help in recovering Netflix’s shares as well as users. Earlier this year, the company announced that it had lost 2 lakh subscribers for the first time in a decade and blamed the password-sharing business for it.
