Nokia 5.1 Plus Review

Most of the smartphones launched this year by Nokia brand smartphone maker HMD Global are part of the Google Android One program. The Google Android One program guarantees three years of security updates and two years of software updates. HMD Global launched Nokia 7 Plus equipped with Android One program in April and Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 Plus this year. Nokia 5.1 Plus was simultaneously launched in August. HMD Global recently launched Nokia 5.1 Plus. The price of Nokia 5.1 Plus is Rs 10,999. In this price you will get 3 GB RAM / 32 GB storage variant. Nokia 5.1 Plus has better specifications as compared to Nokia 5.1. Let us give you detailed information about the phone’s design, software, camera, battery life, etc.

Nokia 5.1 Plus Design

After holding the Nokia 5.1 Plus in hand, the first thing anyone’s attention will be on the premium look of the phone. The entire body of the Nokia 5.1 Plus is made of high-gloss, which gives the phone a stunning look. Looking at the phone, it seems that its price will be above Rs 15,000. At this price, the company has also used 2.5D curved glass on the back panel. Due to the glassy finish, the Nokia 5.1 Plus has some squeakiness which makes it slippery. There were many such incidents with us when the phone fell on the couch and floor, but there was no trace of any kind on it.
The phone has a 5.86-inch display (720×1520 pixels) with an aspect ratio of 19: 9. HMD Global has cut corners to reduce the price of the smartphone. The display of the phone is not bad, colors are vivid and visible effectively, black level is also good. Brightness is sufficient in sunlight, due to which there is no problem while reading things on the display.

All the buttons are given on the right side of the phone. In this budget segment, this Nokia brand smartphone comes with USB Type-C port. On the left side you have a SIM-tray (two nano SIMs) which comes with dual 4G VoLTE support. It is possible to increase the storage with the help of microSD card but for this you will have to remove the second SIM. This means that only one Nano SIM and one card can be used at a time. The Nokia 5.1 Plus’s notch design is first and foremost a big one. Notch has not been used properly, this is because the notification LED has not been given by the company in the notch. You will get a headset with the phone, but the company has not given a silicone cover for the slippery body smartphone. Overall the Nokia 5.1 Plus is a great phone. The handset is lightweight as well as giving a premium look.

Specifications and features of Nokia 5.1 Plus

For speed and multitasking, Nokia 5.1 Plus will have MediaTek Helio P60 octa-core processor. Recall that HMD Global used the Helio P18 chipset in the Nokia 5.1 smartphone. At this price, this chipset has scored more benchmarks than the Snapdragon 636 chipset. At the time of writing the review, this phone is being sold only with 3 GB RAM / 32 GB storage variant. Talking about connectivity, the smartphone will come with Category 3 LTE, dual-band WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth version 4.2, FM radio, USB-OTG and GPS support. But you will not get NFC support in this handset.

Nokia 5.1 Plus runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. In addition to Google Apps, HMD Global’s support app has been given in the phone, which provides the user with the help related to the features of the phone or the facility of booking an appointment at the service center. If the phone’s power button is pressed twice, the camera app opens. The option to hide the notch is not given in the Nokia 5.1 Plus, which is not a big problem as games or video players do not stretch much from the notch.

Nokia 5.1 Plus performance, camera and battery life

We had a lot of fun while using the Nokia 5.1 Plus during the review. Due to the glassy finish, it is easily hit by fingers, but once cleaned, the marks are clear. If you do not want to leave marks on the glassy finish, then keep a cover for this. When using GPS in navigation, chatting and the Uber app, the phone works flawlessly. While playing the game, the space near the LED flash starts heating up very quickly. Not much of the phone gets hot. If the PUBG game is played for half an hour, then the phone starts heating up completely. There is a single loudspeaker at the bottom, the sound is quite loud at full volume. There will be a microphone for calls but there is no button to control music playback.

The camera resolution has been reduced in the Nokia 5.1 Plus compared to the Nokia 5.1. Recall that the Nokia 5.1 had a 16-megapixel sensor on the back panel, while you will get a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel depth sensor in the Nokia 5.1 Plus. But after reviewing, we have no complaints with the rear camera. When clicking a picture in landscape shot, if the light is sufficient, the sensor gives better photo quality. Even with Auto-HDR, the sensor does not give accurate exposure at times. The quality of the secondary depth camera is average in portrait mode. After blurring the photo gives an artificial look instead of real. Apart from this, additional camera features have also been given such as you can also apply a mask on someone’s face. The beauty mode can be adjusted according to convenience, dual, p-i-p, manual and panorama modes are also provided in the rear and front cameras.

The phone is capable of recording videos at 1080p, stabilization will always be on, there is no option to turn it off. Due to the electronic stabilization, the shimmer effect will not be much visible when there is enough light, but the video quality was quite poor when shooting at night. In this you will also get the slow-motion shooting feature which records at 720p resolution at an average of 120 frames per second. There will be an 8-megapixel selfie camera, which gives a good picture when there is enough light, even the screen flash at night does not prove to be effective. Focus speed slows down in low light as well as affects landscape mode.

There is a 3060 mAh battery to bring life to the phone, the battery life of the phone is also good. On a single charge, we used the phone for a whole day. The phone gives a backup of 14 hours 36 minutes in the HD video loop test. Nokia 5.1 Plus does not come with fast charging support, but the 10-watt charger that comes with the phone can charge the phone up to 56 percent in an hour. It may take around 2 hours for the phone to be fully charged.

our decision

It would not be wrong to say that Nokia 5.1 Plus is a great option at a price of Rs 10,999. We can understand that smartphones from other companies offer high resolution at this price, but we did not face any problem while using the HD + display during the review. The hybrid dual-SIM slot might knock you out if you want to have two Nano SIM cards and one card at the same time. Video performance in low light is below average. Nokia 5.1 Plus is the best looking smartphone at this price. Apart from this, this handset is part of Google’s Android One program, battery life is good as well as powerful chipset has been used in this handset of Nokia brand.
