The power and volume buttons are placed on the right side of the phone, while the SIM tray is placed on the left side of the phone. The top and bottom of the phone are flat, with only the secondary microphone at the top. Xiaomi Redmi 8A has a USB Type-C port, it is great to get a Type-C port in this price segment.

The 3.5mm headphone jack, primary microphone and loudspeaker are at the bottom of the phone. The back panel of Redmi 8A houses a single camera with LED flash. There is no fingerprint sensor in the back of the phone.

Redmi 8A specifications and software

Xiaomi has given HD + display with 720×1440 pixels resolution in Redmi 8A. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 has been used for the protection of the screen. Like Redmi 7A, Redmi 8A also has Snapdragon 439 processor. There are two variants of Xiaomi Redmi 8A, a 2 GB RAM and 32 GB storage variant which costs Rs 6,499.

The price of 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage variants of Redmi 8A is Rs 6,999. We have the base variant of Redmi 8A for review. Xiaomi is gradually increasing the battery capacity of this series of phones. Recall that 3,000 mAh battery was given to bring life to Redmi 6A (Review) and now Xiaomi Redmi 8A has been launched with 5,000 mAh battery.

For the information of you people, let us tell you that the Redmi 8A smartphone comes with 18W fast charging support, but Xiaomi has given a 10W charger in the retail box. The Redmi 8A also has two nano-SIM slots and a separate microSD card slot. Both SIMs support 4G and VoLTE, as well as Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n and four satellite navigation systems have been provided in the handset.

The Redmi 8A comes with wireless FM functionality, which means you don’t need a headset to listen to FM. Talking about the software, Xiaomi Redmi 8A runs on MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie. Our review unit runs on the August security patch. The interface is similar to what we have seen in other Xiaomi phones.

Xiaomi Redmi 8A does not have an app drawer and all app icons are placed on the home screen, the phone has several bloatware pre-installed including Mi Community, Paytm, Mi Credit, Mi Store, Amazon, Facebook, WPS Office, Dailyhunt, Gaana and Opera Mini included. Games like Ludo Master, Block Puzzle Guardian, Pop Shooter Blast and Dust Settle will come pre-installed in Redmi 8A. Apart from this, there is also an app store called GetApps.

Like other Xiaomi smartphones, you will continue to get the same spammy notifications on the Redmi 8A. We saw ads while installing new apps, and also found that even stock apps like Mi Music and Mi Video kept sending spammy notifications. On the other hand, the feature of dual apps will also be available in MIUI.

With the help of this feature, you can create two apps of supported apps. With the help of Google Digital Wellbeing feature, you can monitor how you spend time on your smartphone. You can also use gesture navigation instead of the traditional three-button navigation. App lock is built-in in the phone, you can lock apps with the help of password or face recognition.

The handset also has a Game Speed Booster app which is claimed to optimize performance. You can also disable auto-brightness and notification shade swipe gestures while gaming.

Redmi 8A performance and battery life

Redmi 8A has good hardware which provides good experience. Very few times it happened when the phone was slow while using the phone but heavy apps take some time to load. We have 2 GB RAM variants for review and it could not run many apps in the background. There is no fingerprint sensor at the back of the phone but the Face Unlock feature makes unlocking the phone faster.

The viewing angles of the Redmi 8A are good and the sound comes out loud from the speaker as well. However, using the display in sunlight felt like it could have been a bit better. We already have an idea of how the Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor performs, as we have seen the Redmi 7A (review), so the Redmi 8A is not much different.

To bring life to the Redmi 8A, a large 5000 mAh battery has been given. We took an active WhatsApp account during use, took some camera samples, used Google Maps for navigation for two hours, ran some benchmarks and even after all this, the phone’s battery lasted all day and at the end of the day, the phone had 50 percent battery. Still there was a remainder.

In our HD video loop test, the Xiaomi Redmi 8A supported for 16 hours and 31 minutes. The 10-watt charger that comes with the handset can charge the phone to 25 percent in 30 minutes and 46 percent in an hour. It took 2 hours and 30 minutes for the phone to be fully charged. Let us know that the Redmi 8A smartphone supports 18W fast charging and Xiaomi sells the 18W charger for Rs 449.

Redmi 8A Camera

The single camera given in the back of Xiaomi Redmi 8A is equipped with Sony IMX363 sensor. A 12-megapixel camera sensor will be found on the back panel of the phone, its aperture is F / 1.8 and it comes with 1.4 micron pixel size and dual-pixel autofocus. There is an 8-megapixel selfie camera on the front panel of Redmi 8A, its aperture is F / 2.0 and it comes with 1.12 micron pixels.

Xiaomi has used the same camera app as usual. Apart from photo and video modes, you will get shooting modes like Portrait, Pro and Short video. The handset also has HDR and AI scene detection. We found that the Redmi 8A focuses faster during the day but slows down a bit in low light.

Photos taken with the Redmi 8A in sufficient light were good, zooming in to sample shots lacked in detail. During close-up shots, we found the camera to create a good natural depth of field. AI also works fast in the camera app, in this price segment the details were captured correctly in the pictures taken with the handset.

Portrait shots taken with the Redmi 8A had average edge detection but in some of our samples, the background was slightly overexposed. Detail was lacking in low light, Redmi 8A manages the noise in low light but the pictures lacked sharpness. Selfies taken during the day captured detail well and you can apply beautification filters before taking the shot.

The photo quality is not very good in low light as grains are visible on zooming. The primary camera is capable of recording video at 1080 resolution but the handset lacks stabilization.

our decision
