65 new moons of Saturn have been discovered in the solar system, after which it has become the planet with the most moons. Jupiter was by far the largest planet with 95 moons. It is still the largest planet in size but Saturn has once again pushed it back in terms of satellites. The Guardian According to, now the total number of moons of the planet Saturn has increased to 145 and it is the planet with the most satellites.
A team of space scientists at the University of British Columbia has discovered 62 new moons of Saturn. Professor Brett Gladman, an astronomer from the university involved in the research, said that Saturn has not only almost doubled the number of its moons, but it now has the most moons compared to all the other planets in the Solar System. That is, even if all the moons of all other planets are given together, the number of moons of Saturn is much more than that. Now they have been identified with numbers on the basis of research. But soon they will be named after Gallic, Norse and Canadian Inuit gods.
Saturn previously had 83 moons that were identified by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). To find its new moons, the team used a technique called ‘shift and stack’. In this technique some images are used which are shifted at the same speed at which a moon moves. Due to this, the less bright objects present in the space are also visible. These new moons of Saturn are also said to be less bright.
