Suzuki’s First Electric SUV Could Be Based on 2024 Toyota bZ3x

The Suzuki Solterra, like its Subaru counterpart, could be the company’s first all-electric vehicle to be developed in conjunction with Toyota.

In a press release, Suzuki, a specialist in small cars, has reaffirmed its commitment to launching a high-volume electric car by 2025, which could share many of its key elements with a future Toyota electric small SUV that is in development.

Suzuki has already announced the timeline for its move into electric vehicles (EVs), but now the company is committing an investment of $1 billion ($AU1.6B) to the construction of an EV manufacturing facility in India within three years after announcing their plans to move into EVs.

Currently, Suzuki is not announcing the details of its first electric vehicle. However, the company has previewed a future model in the form of a battery-powered concept that will launch in early 2020. It is known as the Futuro-E and is similar to a concept presented by Toyota recently, which could eventually be branded the BZ3X.

With a close working relationship with Toyota, Suzuki is able to offer a number of models which are shared in the overseas markets by the two companies, including the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid-based Suzuki Across and the Toyota Corolla wagon-based Suzuki Swace which is sold in Europe.

Certain international models also share hybrid power-train technology between the two companies.

Also, Toyota has shown that it has a great deal of flexibility when it comes to sharing platforms with electric vehicles. Supposed to be sold as the Subaru Solterra, the BZ4X is 2024 Toyota’s first EV dedicated to electric vehicles, which will also be sold as the Toyota BZ4X in October 2021.

It was announced in April 2021 that Toyota was announcing the names of BYD, Daihatsu, Subaru, and Suzuki as “partners for developing Toyota BZ models”.

Suzuki’s Futuro-E concept is similar to a future Toyota ‘BZ3X’ SUV, in terms of its smaller dimensions, sloping roof line and distinctive C-shaped LED headlights, according to reports in overseas markets. Although some overseas publications say Suzuki may adopt the Toyota BZ4X and Subaru Solterra twins, Suzuki’s Futuro-E concept appears similar as well as Toyota’s future BZ4X.

There is a possibility that Suzuki’s first electric vehicle may be based on the small Toyota concept above, which is about the same size as the C-HR is today, given Suzuki’s extensive experience with small cars and SUVs.
