This luxury F-150 goes a step beyond the regular F-150.
Ford F-150s have been America’s most popular trucks for decades, but their interiors haven’t stood out much.
In addition to the way it drove, the latest Ram 1500 has become the benchmark both for its cabin’s attention to detail and the way it drives. Despite the fact that pickup trucks are usually associated with work, Ram has redefined the concept with its truck. The Ford F-150 interior has remained mostly unchanged even though a new generation of the truck is coming in 2021. It has finally been possible for Ford to upgrade its cabin experience with the introduction of the F-150 Lightning.
Better, but similar
Existing Ford F-150 customers who are interested in going electric can opt for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. There are many similarities between the Lightning and the regular F-150, including the interior, which is based on the F-150’s exterior. In addition to the ease of operation, there are no learning curves; everything is arranged exactly the way it needs to be. Also, you can fold down the shifter and open the center console to set up your workspace.
Even better is its huge 15.5-inch touch screen straight from the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Although we’re not big fans of virtual buttons, Ford’s screen makes it easy to toggle between menus and adjust temperature and fan speed. The graphics display is very cool, and the processor is fast, so everything runs very smoothly. Furthermore, the navigation system shows all nearby electric charging stations and will recommend where to stop and how long you should stay based on your battery level. While it is not as useful as Tesla’s supercharger map, which shows you in real time how many superchargers are available, each station’s brand and kilowatt-hour rating are displayed.
Moreover, the vertical display will blow your friends away; it occupies the entire center dashboard, increasing both the technology and the experience inside your car.
The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat example we tested had a denim-like trim on some parts of its door panels and dashboard, making it look premium and different from the regular F-150. The materials inside the Rivian R1T feel more luxurious than those inside the other textured plastics in the cabin, but it won’t be a big problem if you like the rest of the truck.
Let’s relax now
There are some changes to the driver’s and front passenger’s seats that allow them to recline 180 degrees so you can nap while the truck charges. To experience the full 180-degree view, you have to lift the rear seats, so it’s not the most comfortable position. Also, it requires you to bend your knees. However, it is nice to have and something we’re sure some will use. Overall, the seats are comfortable, supportive, and wide, allowing you to lie on your back when catching some Zs (or even taking a nap when you wait at a public charger).
The F-150 offers plenty of headroom and legroom for passengers in the back, just like the regular F-150. The interior space is even better than that of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Is the Ford F-150 Lightning a good buy in 2022?
Ford F-150 Lightning beat Rivian R1T in our comparison of the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning with a 2022 Rivian R1T, despite extremely close calls. Our pick-up truck evaluation revealed that the F-150 offers more value despite the fact that they belong to different segments. We should note that software and over-the-air updates are likely to play an increasingly important role in the future of the EV market and in the vehicles’ performance.
In sum, we are impressed with the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning’s in-cabin experience compared to its conventional counterpart, and we are grateful for the upgrades that Ford’s designers made. For those considering purchasing an F-150 in the near future, the Lightning is your best option, and is certainly worth examining further.
