Microsoft is aiming to offer Windows 11 to all eligible Windows 10 devices by the middle of 2022. Meanwhile, the Windows 11 upgrade will initially be available for new Windows 10 PCs. New PC models from several companies including Asus, HP and Lenovo are starting to come with Windows 11 pre-installed. Partner PCs like Acer and Dell will be coming soon with the new version. Microsoft is also bringing pre-installed Windows 11 to its new range of Surface devices, which starts tomorrow in the US.
How to get Windows 11 update on an existing PC
Along with the new PCs, Microsoft is rolling out Windows 11 to older eligible PCs phase by phase. You can check for Windows 11 updates on your PC by going to the Windows Update section. You can also download Microsoft’s PC Health app to your PC to check if the machine is eligible for the upcoming update.
If your PC is eligible to receive Windows 11 but updates are yet to come, you can use Microsoft’s Installation Assistant to get the latest Windows operating system. All you need to do is hit the Download Now button on the Installation Assistant and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Microsoft has also provided the option to create a bootable USB drive or DVD from its Windows 11 software page. Additionally, you can create a Windows 11 Disc Image (ISO) that will be available on bootable installation media such as a USB flash drive or DVD to help you install the new Windows version on your machine.
Windows 11 features
Windows 11, introduced in June, is designed to be Microsoft’s most advanced operating system for PCs. The new version brings a new user interface in which the Start menu is given in the center. It also brings upgraded fonts and notification sound. It also integrates with Microsoft Teams to allow users to connect with others over chat, voice or video calls. Windows 11 also improves multitasking with Snap Layout and Groups. It also supports multidesktop and has many accessibility features like Narrator, Magnifier, Closed Captions and Windows Speech Recognition.
As for the new form factor, Windows 11 comes with a larger touch target and includes haptic feedback support for stylus pens, including the Surface Slim Pen 2.
There are also dedicated features for PC gamers. These include features like DirectX 12, the option to turn Auto HDR on or off, DirectStorage which claims to reduce load times, and NVMe to help render detailed and better graphics using SSD storage and DirectX 12 GPU. Huh.
Microsoft has separately pre-installed the Xbox app for users to browse, download and play over 100 PC games. Along with regular users, Windows 11 can be experienced by enterprises and students as well. Microsoft has allowed organizations to migrate their teams to the new Windows version via the cloud by using Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop.
Windows 11 will also get features running Android apps in the future. At launch, Microsoft featured dedicated access to the Amazon Appstore within the Microsoft Store to allow new Android apps to be downloaded on Windows 11 PCs.
