Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen won the French Grand Prix on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton finished second and teammate George Russell third at Mercedes 300th grand prix. It is 63 points to Verstappen in the championship.

A unforced error on the 18th lap cost Leclerc the race after he took the lead early from pole.

The spectators and the team radio erupted in gasps when Leclerc lost control in turn 11.

After the restart, Verstappen took the lead, while Hamilton and Sergio Perez pursued him.

Verstappen increased his lead over Hamilton by ten seconds by the 30th lap, leading Hamilton by four seconds.

Hamilton took the lead at the start of the race, but Perez could not keep up with him.

By lap 14 with hard tyres on his Ferrari, Carlos Sainz moved up into the top 10 after starting 19th.

During the race, he overtook the Alpines and McLarens to finish fifth.

Norris finished seventh and Ricciardo ninth, putting Alpine ahead of McLaren going into Hungary.
