Xiaomi Mi Max Review, Review of Xiaomi Mi Max

This is not a very old thing, when it became very common for people to carry a 7-inch tablet with their primary phone. It was a bit odd to look at, but Samsung’s affordable Tab series has made it into trend. Last year Lenovo forayed into this segment with the Fab Plus. Now Xiaomi has tried to do something new through Mi Max.

Like Lenovo’s handset, the Mi Max is also designed keeping in mind content entertainment, such as videos, games or apps. In terms of features and specifications, the Mi Max appears to be the larger display version of the company’s popular smartphone Redmi Note 3 (Review). Has the company achieved another hit formula through Xiaomi Mi Max? We spent more than a week with this device. And we think so.

look and design
Making a big screen smartphone is not a magic. But the best phone is achieved only after striking a balance between dimensions, weight and build. Xiaomi Mi Max It has a 6.44-inch display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It is also equipped with the company’s Sunlight Display Technology. Let us tell you that the screen is very big, in front of it the iPhone 6 Plus also looks small. However, Xiaomi has tried to keep the edges and the space above and below the display small for this. The front glass is also slightly curved and due to this the edges are not that sharp.

The Mi Max is quite thin. Thickness is only 7.5 mm. The volume and power buttons are on the right and they work well. The hybrid SIM tray is on the left. You will be able to use two SIM cards or one SIM card and microSD card at a time.

The mono-speaker is at the bottom of the phone. It is present with Micro-USB port. The headphone socket and infrared emitter are placed at the top. Due to the metal surface, the phone slips a lot in the hands. In such a situation, it would not be wrong to use a rubber cover.

The primary camera, dual-tone LED flash and fingerprint sensor are present in the rear. The metal rim on the side of the camera protrudes a bit, but we didn’t find much complaint of scratches during use. The weight of the Mi Max is 203 grams, which is quite heavy. But to be honest, it doesn’t feel like holding it in the hands. It is very difficult to type on the phone with one hand.

Using this phone is not easy. Even after using it continuously for a week, we faced problems. Keeping it in pocket is even more difficult. Mi Max will always attract the attention of others towards you. The reason for this is not just the display, but it looks premium and its build quality is also excellent.

A charger, cable, SIM ejector tool and some instruction manuals were supplied with our test unit.

Specifications and software
The Xiaomi Mi Max smartphone comes with the tried-and-tested hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 chipset, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. The company will soon launch a more powerful variant in India which comes with Octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor, 4 GB RAM and 128 GB inbuilt storage. Other specifications include dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, USB OTG, 4G, Voice over LTE and FM radio. It does not have NFC feature.

Mi Max runs on MIUI 7 based on Android Marshmallow. This customized ROM was also used by the company in Xiaomi Mi 5. Now on Tap feature of Marshmallow is not present in this. The company has told us that it is in the works and is expected to be launched soon. It will upgrade to MIUI 8 in the coming months.

To make tasks like typing easier, the Mi Max comes with a one-handed mode that can be activated by going to the settings. With the help of this technology, the content on the display becomes in the size of 4.5, 4 or 3.5 inches. You can perform this action by swiping left or right on the capacitive buttons.

With the help of ‘Shortcut Menu’ or ‘Quick Ball’, users can assign to five different functions or apps. It is similar to the AsactiveTouch feature of the iPhone. And is present on the sides of the display. If you want, you can prevent it from appearing in selected apps.

The software in our test unit was pretty stable, so we didn’t notice any major glitches during use. The operating system works great and there was no problem in multitasking. At any point of time you will have 800 MB RAM available in the phone. We found that the sound coming from the earpiece was less than expected, but it was clear. It is not easy to hold the handset in hand during long phone calls. The Snapdragon 650 chipset is powerful for most apps and games.

Xiaomi has given its own music player with the handset. With this you get many audio enhancements and equalizer presets.

Talking about the camera, it has a primary sensor of 16 megapixels. It is capable of recording videos of 4K resolution. With the front camera of 5 megapixels, you will be able to record videos of 720 pixels. The rear camera also has phase detection autofocus, which works well in most situations. Landscape and macro shots in daylight come with great detail. But sometimes the app makes the object too sharp. You will realize this drawback when you zoom in to crop the photo. The front camera takes great selfies in good light.

The video quality was good even in low light. Slow-motion and time-lapse video modes are also present. The camera app comes with different shooting modes. There’s also a manual mode in which you’ll be able to set shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focus. It focuses fast. However, pictures taken indoors and in low light were of average quality. We also saw this deficiency in Redmi Note 3.

battery life
In Mi Max, the company has given a big battery of 4850 mAh. It will easily last for two days of active use. In our video loop test, it lasted for 21 hours and 11 minutes, which is excellent. The Mi Max comes with a 10W power adapter that speeds up the charging process.

our decision
It can be said with confidence that Xiaomi Mi Max is a great phone. But this time the company’s eye is on a specific type of consumer. It is possible that there is a demand for phones with large displays and now such consumers have got the option. Xiaomi Mi Max can do the job of reviving this segment and it is an all-round handset. The size of the phone is largely dependent on personal preference. But due to this device, the user gets rid of the tension of having a separate tablet with the phone.

The build quality of the phone is good. The display is good and the battery life is excellent. The performance of the phone is also great. We weren’t happy with the camera quality and the stereo speakers didn’t live up to our expectations. It will not be easy for most people to use it. If you are looking for a tablet size smartphone, then Mi Max is the best option in its price bracket.
